I recently attended the Next Stage launch at Sri Swami Vivekananda University\u2019s Department of Career Development, a much-needed initiative because let\u2019s be honest\u2014our education system teaches trigonometry but not how to handle workplace conflicts. We get degrees, but when life throws real exams\u2014decision-making, resilience, emotional intelligence\u2014we panic like students who forgot there was a test.<\/p>\n
The truth? Life skills matter more than marks. And yet, they\u2019re rarely taught. Here are seven skills every child should learn\u2014at home, in school, and in life:<\/p>\n
1. Decision-Making: Stop Raising \u201cGoogle It\u201d Kids<\/p>\n
Most kids don\u2019t make real decisions\u2014parents do it for them. Then suddenly at 18, they\u2019re expected to choose a career, manage money, or even pick a life partner. No wonder half of us feel lost!<\/p>\n
Start small. Let kids decide what\u2019s for dinner. Let them budget their pocket money. If they mess up, great! Better they learn consequences on pizza toppings than on a major life decision.<\/p>\n
2. Conflict Management: Life is Not a Bollywood Movie<\/p>\n
Many kids are kept out of arguments, growing up thinking conflict is a bad thing. Then, as adults, they either explode or shut down when disagreements happen.<\/p>\n
Teach them to debate respectfully, negotiate solutions, and understand different perspectives. Otherwise, they\u2019ll think \u201cghosting\u201d is the only way to handle disagreements.<\/p>\n
3. Emotional Intelligence: Degrees Don\u2019t Save You From Meltdowns<\/p>\n
IQ gets you a job. EQ (Emotional Intelligence) helps you keep it. But do we teach kids how to handle emotions? Nope. \u201cStop crying\u201d and \u201cGo to your room\u201d is not emotional education.<\/p>\n
Imagine if schools actually taught stress management, handling failure, and self-awareness instead of ignoring emotions like they\u2019re spam emails.<\/p>\n
4. Resilience: Life Won\u2019t Give You a Participation Trophy<\/p>\n
Kids who never face challenges grow into adults who quit at the first sign of difficulty. Lost a game? Don\u2019t bribe them with chocolate. Failed a test? Teach them to try again.<\/p>\n
Resilience is built when we fail, adapt, and keep going. It\u2019s the difference between \u201cI\u2019ll try again\u201d and \u201cI give up.\u201d<\/p>\n
5. Financial Literacy: Because \u201cMoney Doesn\u2019t Grow on Trees\u201d is Not a Lesson<\/p>\n
Schools teach calculus but not how to budget a salary. So, people enter adulthood knowing how to solve for X but not how to file taxes.<\/p>\n
Teach kids to save, budget, and understand money early. Otherwise, their first salary will disappear into Starbucks and online shopping before they realize rent is due.<\/p>\n
6. Communication: WhatsApp Emojis Don\u2019t Count<\/p>\n
Public speaking, writing emails, negotiating\u2014these skills determine success. But instead of learning them, kids spend time writing essays on \u201cThe Cow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Encourage debates, storytelling, and self-expression at home. If kids can\u2019t speak up for themselves, the world will speak over them.<\/p>\n
7. Work-Life Balance: Burnout is Not a Trophy<\/p>\n
If kids see parents constantly overworking and exhausted, they assume that\u2019s normal. Teach them that:
\n\u2714 Success is great, but so is happiness.
\n\u2714 Hard work matters, but so does self-care.
\n\u2714 You can chase dreams without chasing burnout.<\/p>\n

Life skills aren\u2019t \u201cextra\u201d subjects\u2014they\u2019re the foundation of success. Schools need to integrate them into education, and parents need to actively teach them instead of hoping kids will \u201cfigure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
If we do this right, the next generation won\u2019t just have degrees\u2014they\u2019ll have the strength, wisdom, and resilience to truly succeed.<\/p>\n
